| ATHLETIC REHABILITATION - term coined by Gary Shiffman, PT, ATC, CSCS, to describe his approach to physical therapy treatment.
Athletic rehabilitation describes an approach to physical therapy for all patients, not just athletes. The ultimate goal for all patients is to return to full physical activity whether work or play, as soon as safety permits. This approach uses the basic principles of sports medicine and applies these principles to rehabilitation of any physical therapy patient
- ASAP - Return the patient to full activity safely, but as soon as possible. This approach demands that the rehab team, consisting of the patient’s physician, therapist, and most importantly, the patient, work effectively and efficiently to achieve optimal results.
- Functional progression - All patients are progressed thru the rehab process in a step by step process by building on previously attained goals.
- Patient participation - Rehabilitation is an active process requiring effort and commitment from the patient. The therapist is there to guide the patient through the obstacles that may occur along the way.
- Return to play criteria - Athletes must pass physical tests of their readiness to return to sport. All patients must exhibit enough improvement in their condition to return to the physical demands of life safely before they are discharged from formal treatment.
All treatments are by appointment only.
